CRASH AND BURN: Boca Isles South Burglar Crashes Getaway Car at Cop Shop

A security guard for Boca Isles South tried to stop a burglar Tuesday night but found himself in the middle of a major crime. The alleged burglar — instead of waiting for police — took the security guard’s vehicle and fled — only to end up in a violent, head-on crash at U.S. 441 and Clint Moore Road. That’s right in front of the entrance to the District 7 substation of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened around 7 p.m. The guard was on routine patrol when he saw what appeared to be a burglary in process. The guard, according to sources, called PBSO and then apprehended the suspect. Or at least thought he did. The suspect, however, broke away and took the guard’s “rover” vehicle — a Ford Explorer. The suspect drove north on Cain, turned right on Yamato, turned left onto U.S. 441, and then crashed head-on into another vehicle. The Explorer ended up in a clump of trees, where witnesses say it burned briefly.

“At approximately 6:55, PBCFR Units were dispatched to the intersection of Clint Moore Road and SR 7 for a vehicle accident with fire.  911 callers stated a vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with a tree and caught fire with flames showing. Initial arriving units found a private security vehicle vs tree with smoke but no active flames. Crews used a Thermal Imaging Camera to visualize a large heat source coming from the engine compartment.  They used a hoseline to ensure that there was no additional fire. One person was transported to a local hospital.  PBSO is investigating this incident.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office late Tuesday said the investigation continues and that injuries were minor. We will update with arrest and charge information later Wednesday.
