Two people were injured in a traffic crash at Holmes Beach Monday morning that blocked both lanes of Manatee Avenue, cutting off access to and from Anna Maria Island for at least two hours, police said.

The crash took place near the Kingfish Boat Ramp just before 9:30 a.m., witnesses told ABC7.

As a vehicle towing a boat came out of the boat ramp, it was hit by another vehicle, Holmes Beach Police Chief William Tokajer said. The boat was knocked off its trailer, coming to rest across both lanes of traffic.

While police were able to divert traffic slowly around the crash, drivers were urged to use the Cortez Bridge to get on and off the island on one of the busiest holidays of the year.

The two people injured were taken to area hospitals, Tokajer said.

The road reopened after about two hours, he said.
