A Davie man was arrested after a dispute over walking a dog escalated into the battery of his girlfriend’s parents, police confirmed Monday.
The altercation began when Glenn Karant, 64, refused to walk the dog around 7 p.m. Sunday at his girlfriend’s home near the 11000 block of North Harmony Lake Circle in Davie.
According to an arrest report, Karant, who was staying at the home, became agitated and began mumbling in English, causing tension with the couple who only spoke Mandarin.
Police said Karant then stood up from the couch and took a walking cane from his girlfriend’s father, causing him to fall to the floor. The victim’s wife told authorities that Karant kicked her husband while he was down, prompting the victim to punch Karant in the face in self-defense.
Police said the couple’s daughter, who translated their account of the incident to police, showed them the home’s Ring surveillance footage, which they said confirmed the victims’ accounts of the incident.
While neither victim had visible injuries, police determined from the video and witness accounts that Karant intentionally took his girlfriend’s father’s cane, causing his fall, and knowingly kicked him during the altercation, according to the report.
Jail records show Karant faces two counts of battery on a person 65 years or older and is being held at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail on a $10,000 bond as of Monday.
