An electrical fire broke out in a commercial building Sunday night in Daytona Beach, officials said.
The Daytona Beach Fire Department said it responded to 149 East International Speedway and found heavy fire and smoke from the second floor.
No one was found inside the building at the time, and no one was hurt, the fire department said.
But, according to local historian Jordan Tyler Hobson, a piece of the city’s history was a part of the building.
“I always like to tell myself that I have Ph.D. in local history,” Hobson said.
Hobson, the former vice president of Holly Hill Historical Society told News 6 that this building was once home to Willies W. Marshall.
“Later in life it became dental offices and what not,” Hobson said.
Hobson said Marshall, who died in 1944, was a prominent developer in the early 1900′s. Hobson also mentioned that Marshall was once the one of the city’s largest single taxpayers.
For example, he was behind the development of the neighborhood Marshall Park, owned several hotels and stores off North Beach Street.
News 6 reached out to Daytona Beach Fire Department to see if the building is a total loss. Officials said that call would be made through an insurance company, and they do not have any updates at this time.
