DeLand police investigating after person stabbed Tuesday evening

A man was arrested on Tuesday evening following a stabbing that left a person injured in DeLand.

Joseph Varela, 30, was arrested by the DeLand Police Department shortly after the incident.

Police officers responded to the 1400 block of North Woodland Boulevard around 5:15 p.m. for an apparent disturbance between two men. Police said a man was stabbed in the neck and chest by a suspect who fled the scene before officers arrived.

The victim was taken via helicopter to a nearby hospital for his injuries.

Police believe the fight was between two transients. Officers said the suspect was taken into custody several hours after the stabbing and will be charged with aggravated battery.
