The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a hit-and-run near Spectra Apartments in Fort Myers.
Deputies swarmed an area off US-41 and Alico Road on Tuesday evening. Deputies said while on patrol, they saw a car speeding northbound through a redlight on S Tamiami Trail.
Deputies followed the car, which they said was swerving and almost hit another vehicle.
According to reports, once deputies were closer to the car the driver got in the left lane of S Tamiami Tr and Emerson Square Blvd before striking a car.
The driver then crossed the street on Emerson Blvd and reportedly hit two more cars.
Deputies said the car stopped in the grass before the driver ran away. Reports said the driver was gone. A perimeter was set up to locate the suspect after deputies found the vehicle unoccupied.
LCSO said no one has been arrested at this time.
Residents who saw the commotion were shocked to see such a big law enforcement presence.
“It was definitely a little bit of a shock to come in, pull in from work, and just see a bunch of cops everywhere and a car crashed,” Spectra resident Pheobe Jackson said.
Other residents also were surprised to see the investigation.
“We’ve never seen anything like it. It’s full of families. It’s really quiet. Everybody kind of minds their own business. So cop cars here is a little weird because it’s never happened before,” Cary Jackson said.
No injuries were reported.
LCSO said this is still an active investigation. You can count on NBC2 to keep you updated.
