A murder suspect was killed after a traffic stop turned into an exchange of gunfire with deputies near Suncoast Drive and Laurel Lane in Suncoast Estates.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were attempting to take the suspect into custody before he pointed a handgun and fired shots at deputies.
The suspect has been identified as 21-year-old A N. Neal was wanted for a Saturday shooting along Heck Drive that killed one person and injured another.
According to LCSO, deputies were arresting him for a felony warrant when he pointed a handgun and shot at deputies.
LCSO said three deputies then returned fire and ultimately killed Neal.
No deputies were injured in the incident.
The deputies involved are on paid administrative leave, per agency policy.
The warrant for N included charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and robbery.
According to LCSO, N was a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history that included felony battery, vehicle theft and fleeing and eluding.
LCSO said this is an active investigation and is in its preliminary stages.
