Deputies: Woman shoots man as duo tries to rob her while cleaning Cantonment rental home

A woman shot a man who tried to rob her on Sunday as she was cleaning her rental property, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Ja’tarius Johnson, 19, is charged withrobbery with a firearm, grand theft, and grand theft of a firearm.

Aviaun Smith, 22, has an active warrant for robbery with a firearm, grand theft, and grand theft of a firearm.

The incident happened in the 400-block of Forrest Street.

According to the sheriff’s office, a woman was cleaning her rental property. Johnson and Smith were assisting her.

“One of the males pulled out a handgun and attempted to rob the victim by taking her purse,” deputies say in a release. “During a struggle for the purse, the victim was able to retrieve her handgun and fired one shot. The suspects then fled the scene.”

Deputies located Johnson a short time later at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to his foot. He was arrested and charged.

Smith is still wanted by deputies.
