A Doral man was arrested Monday after police said he choked and battered his pregnant girlfriend during an argument.
The victim, who has been in a relationship with 27-year-old N A U for seven years, told Doral police that she was attacked around 9 p.m. Sunday night in their bedroom at a location that was not disclosed in an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Tuesday.
She said the argument began at a restaurant when he threatened to hit their 5-year-old child without cause, according to an arrest report.
During a recorded interview at the Doral police station, the victim recounted that Umana told her, “If you say, ‘leave me alone’ one more time, you’re going to see.”’
When the victim repeated her request for U to “leave her alone,” he then jumped on top of her, sat on her stomach, and choked her with both hands for over a minute, obstructing her airway inside their home, the report stated.
The victim said she managed to push U off using her legs while grabbing his hair in self-defense. He then reportedly grabbed her wrist before falling onto the bed beside her, according to police.
Police said they noticed visible injuries on the victim’s neck and wrist that were consistent with her statement.
The victim’s mother confirmed receiving a phone call from her daughter about the incident and expressed concerns about Umana’s history of violent behavior.
Authorities said U was taken into custody Monday evening, waived his Miranda rights, and denied touching the victim but admitted to arguing with her in their bedroom.
Police said they established probable cause to charge U with aggravated battery of a pregnant victim, noting he was aware of the victim’s two-month pregnancy at the time of the attack.
As of Tuesday, he is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as “to be set.”
