Double shooting in St. Petersburg leaves 1 child, 1 adult injured: police

An adult and his young nephew were injured in a shooting in St. Petersburg Tuesday afternoon, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The double shooting happened just after 7 p.m. outside a home on 15th Street South, according to Yolanda Fernandez, a spokesperson for the police department.

“As far as we know, what we have is a 40-year-old man and a 9-year-old little boy that were out here in the street in front of these houses and somehow they were struck by gunshots,” F said.

Police later issued a correction stating that the boy is 10 years old.

They were both taken to a local hospital. Officials said the man is expected to survive his injuries. The child’s injuries, however, were more serious, F explained.

The boy was listed in very critical, but stable condition Tuesday night.

“We are hopeful that he will be OK as well,” F said during a press conference that night.

Detectives remained on scene well into Tuesday night canvassing the area and looking for anybody with information.

While police do not believe the shooting was accidental, F said they also have no reason to believe anyone would target a young child.

The police department’s preliminary investigation indicated that the victims were likely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“Right now, it’s just really important that we have more information and tips from the public,” F said.

Multiple people were outside their homes at the time of the shooting, and detectives were looking for anyone who might have video of the incident.

“We’re hoping we can depend on people that come forward,” F reiterated. “If they’re not concerned with the 40-year-old man who was shot, then they should be concerned that a [10-year-old] boy ended up being the victim in this case.”

No further information was immediately available.
