A man has been charged following a deadly hit-and-run on Sunday in Marion County.
Belleview Police Department officers arrested C P P, 25, on Monday on charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash.
Witnesses reported around 3 p.m. on Sunday that a Lincoln Town Car hit a 34-year-old woman as she crossed U.S. Highway 441.
Surveillance video from a nearby business showed P, the driver, speeding through the right turning lane to bypass traffic stopped at a red light. The vehicle hit the woman and continued southbound without ever stopping.
The vehicle was reported to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office before the crash for reckless driving. Witnesses described the vehicle, driver, and the license.
Detectives determined P was the registered owner of the vehicle. They learned he was staying at a camper in the backyard of a home in Summerfield.
When authorities arrived, P initially refused to exit the camper but eventually complied and was taken into custody. He was booked into the Marion County Jail.
P told a neighbor his car had been stolen. Investigators have yet to find the vehicle. They ask anyone with information to contact the Belleview Police Department at 352-245-7044 or Crime Stoppers at 352-368-STOP (7867).
