A Boynton Beach man allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop late Wednesday night is accused of running a red light and causing a deadly six-car collision.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO), an Atlantis Police Department officer tried to stop a Volkswagen Tiguan, but the SUV refused to stop and fled the scene. The PBSO report indicates the officer opted not to chase the fleeing driver.
The driver, identified as Raekwon Johnson, was headed south on Congress Avenue around 10:15 p.m. when he drove through a red light at the Lantana Road intersection and smashed into the driver’s side of a Ford Escape.
The force of the impact spun the vehicle 90 degrees where it collided with an Infiniti EX35, which itself spun into Honda Pilot, the report continued. The force of that impact sent the Infiniti backwards into Hyundai Sonata and forced the sedan into a Chevrolet Avalanche.
The driver of the vehicle that had refused to stop for police took off running but was soon rounded up by Atlantis police. Investigators suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Johnson was injured in the crash, although the report did not state if he went to the hospital. While he was taken into custody, jail records as of 8 a.m. do not show that he has been booked on any counts.
The 67-year-old Lake Worth Beach woman driving the Ford Escape, identified as Sacha Rukin, died in wreck, the report indicated. The driver of the Infiniti suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. No other injuries were reported.
