A man was arrested after Tampa police said evidence revealed that he was traveling at over 100 mph just before a deadly crash.
G M, 67, was charged with one count of felony vehicular homicide in connection with the Jan. 3 crash, the Tampa Police Department said Thursday.
The three-car crash happened around 9:44 a.m. at the intersection of McKinley Drive and Bougainvillea Avenue.
Police said M was speeding through a changing light in a Ram 2500 when he struck a Kia Sorento being driven by a woman in her mid-30s.
A third driver in a Kia Forte swerved to try to avoid hitting the Kia Sorento and drove off the roadway, eventually striking a light pole.
Authorities said the driver of the Kia Sorento was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries she sustained from the crash.
The driver of the Kia Forte, described only as an adult male, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been released, police reported.
M and a passenger in his vehicle were also taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Evidence gathered during the police department’s investigation into the crash proved that M was traveling at more than 55 mph over the posted speed limit when the crash occurred, detectives said.
M was arrested at his home without incident on Tuesday, Jan. 7. He is being held in the Pasco County Jail.
