Driver killed, another flown to hospital after crash on Krome Avenue

One driver was killed and another was airlifted to a hospital after two pickup trucks crashed off of Krome Avenue in Hialeah Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said they first received reports that a Dodge pickup truck and a Ford pickup truck crashed near the intersection of Okeechobee Road and Krome Avenue at around 5 a.m.

The driver of the Dodge, an adult man, did not survive, according to FHP. The driver of the Ford was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed both pickup trucks with heavy front-end damage. The body of the driver who was killed was covered by a yellow tarp in the wreckage of his pickup.

Two hours after the fatal collision, emergency crews could still be seen on scene.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

The southbound lanes of Okeechobee Road were closed as the investigation continues, FHP said. Alternate routes to avoid lane closures include the Turnpike and U.S. 27.

This is a developing story.
