Driver killed by falling road sign on I-4 during Hurricane Helene

A deadly crash has partially blocked I-4 in Tampa as Hurricane Helene passes by the Tampa Bay area.

The driver was killed after a falling road sign hit their car, Tampa Fire Rescue told 10 Tampa Bay.

The crash was reported around 7:53 p.m. at mile marker 1, troopers said. Traffic cameras show a heavy police presence as troopers investigate the crash.

Little is known about the crash at this time, but many county leaders in the Tampa Bay area are urging residents to shelter in place and stay off the highway as the Category 4 storm passes through.

As of the latest advisory, Hurricane Helene remains a Category 4 storm as it is expected to bring damaging hurricane winds and storm surge Thursday evening to the Big Bend region of Florida.

As Hurricane Helene nears the northeast Gulf Coast, it’s expected to bring “catastrophic” winds and storm surge to parts of the region, according to the National Hurricane Center.
