Driver killed following crash into canal in Lehigh Acres

The Florida Highway Patrol and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a deadly crash into a canal in Lehigh Acres.

The crash occurred on Sunshine Boulevard and 55th Street, north of the fire station, and was reported to law enforcement late Monday.

According to FHP, the driver, a 47-year-old man from Lehigh Acres, was traveling south on Sunshine Boulevard North, south of 55th Street West.

The vehicle then veered to the left, traveling off the roadway and into a water-filled canal east of Sunshine Boulevard North, killing him.

Multiple law enforcement vehicles were called to the scene to remove the vehicle from the water.

The Iona McGregor Fire District and their Special Operations Dive Team were called to assist the scene.
