The driver of a BMW sedan allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run early Friday morning was going approximately 90 mph shortly before the crash, a witness estimated.

A Stuart woman was booked on a DUI manslaughter count following the collision, which happened shortly before 7 a.m. on a Martin County bridge. According to the affidavit against her, Elise Elder took two breathalyzer tests around 12:40 p.m. that day, and both recorded her blood alcohol levels at more than two and a half times the legal limit.

Elder, 23, is accused of killing a 67-year-old bicyclist in the wreck which happened on 10-Cent bridge, leading into Sewall’s Point. A Florida Highway Patrol report stated Elder was heading east on Northeast Ocean Boulevard towards South Seawall’s Point Road around 6:45 a.m. when her 2019 BMW 530i drifted into the bike lane “for unknown reasons.”

In the affidavit, the investigating trooper states the witness recounted heading east on Southeast Ocean Boulevard when a BMW raced by. The witness came to the aforementioned estimate based on their own speed when the BMW passed, which the witness recalled being 48 mph.

The witness recounted reaching the crest of 10-Cent bridge and seeing what was described as a debris field and believing that the BMW may have blown a tire. Reaching the scene, the witness spotted the head and torso of the bicyclist on the road, the affidavit stated. The report also notes the damage from the vehicle discovered in the area.

The bicycle, however, was carried for more than a mile by the BMW from the scene of the collision, about 1000 feet east of Southeast St. Lucie Boulevard, to 95 S. Sewall’s Point Road, the trooper reported.

In addition to the DUI Manslaughter allegation, Elder is accused of Elder was also booked for leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

The name of the bicyclist has not been released.

According to officials, Elder bonded out of jail over the weekend.
