48-year-old Florida man is facing a felony charge for allegedly firing his gun into the air after telling a woman he could teach her grandchild — a toddler — how to use his weapon, according to court documents and local reports.
Scott Alexander Rich of Coral Springs, Florida, was allegedly walking down the street flashing a firearm on Christmas Day, local news outlet Coral Springs Talk reported.
A witness told police they saw Rich, who appeared to be intoxicated, approach an older woman out with her 17-month-old grandchild and told her he could show the toddler how to use the firearm, according to a complaint affidavit. The witness reported hearing gunshots, and other neighbors reported more gunshots.
The 911 caller told dispatchers Rich had a history of erratic behavior and a “drinking problem,” according to the complaint affidavit.
When police arrived at the scene, officers saw Rich enter an open garage door and discharge multiple rounds from the firearm in an “unknown direction,” according to the complaint affidavit. When asked to surrender his weapon, Rich reportedly refused to comply.
Rich eventually dropped his weapon, but still defied the officers’ orders. He was then taken into custody and charged with resisting an officer, disorderly intoxication in a public place, discharging a firearm in public and improper exhibition of a firearm.
