The Bonita Springs Fire and Rescue District responded to a unit fire Wednesday at the Sanctuary at Imperial River condominium community.
The complex sits off US-41 and River Homes Lane.
Fire crews say the call came it just after 7:30 p.m., after multiple neighbors reported they could see smoke coming from a unit on the second floor.
The three-story building had to be evacuated as crews tried to put out the fire caused by an e-bike’s lithium-ion battery, according to Chief Greg DeWitt.
“Some batteries get what they call’ thermal runaway’ where they just keep overheating and then they bridge the battery itself and just overheat so much that they melt anything around it,” Chief DeWitt said.
The homeowner told fire officials they were charging an e-bike battery when it melted and the carpet caught on fire. Chief DeWitt said the fire was small enough that they were able to smother it and put it out quickly, but that is not always the case with these types of fires.
“You need to stop the thermal runaway, so the only real way to do that is through copious amounts of water,” Chief DeWitt said.
Make sure when charging lithium-ion batteries, you do so properly.
“Once those batteries get charged fully, unplug them,” Chief DeWitt said. “Make sure it’s not around anything flammable… don’t leave it on a couch charging, don’t leave it on the bed charging… put it on something concrete that is not flammable.”
