Elderly man shoots friend over ex-girlfriend, faces attempted murder: PBSO report

An 84-year-old man is accused of shooting his long-time friend over a dispute involving his ex-girlfriend.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said the shooting occurred early Sunday morning in Riviera Beach.

According to the arrest report, Vance Davis believed that his friend, the victim, had formed a relationship with his ex-girlfriend. On the night of the shooting, the victim and Davis’s ex-girlfriendwere sitting in the victim’s car — parked behind Davis’s porch — listening to music.

The arrest affidavit stated that Davis approached the vehicle and fired a shot through the driver’s side window as the victim attempted to flee. The friend managed to drive away and was later found by the Riviera Beach Police Department on Broadway Street then taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators learned that the victim was shot once in the shoulder, the arrest report stated that fragmented pellets from the bullet were later found in his chest, almost hitting his vital organs. The victim told investigators he and Davis had been friends for several years, and described the alleged assailant as an “angry old man,” and denied any relationship with the suspect’s girlfriend.

Deputies detained Davis outside his apartment, according to the arrest report. During the investigation, Davis admitted to the shooting, saying it was regarding the perceived relationship between the victim and his ex. A consented search of Davis’ residence, revealed the firearm used in the shooting, with one expended casing in the chamber.

Through witness accounts and evidence collected throughout the investigation, PBSO said Davis will face attempted first-degree murder with a firearm and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
