A 71-year-old woman died five days after being involved in a crash with a 17-year-old in Wellington.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said the crash occurred on September 11, at the intersection of Forest Hill Boulevard and Block Island Road, outside the Lakeside Shores community.
The 17-year-old boy was driving a Lexus is250, exiting the community onBlock Island Road and preparing to enter the northbound lanes of Forest Hill Boulevard, according to the crash report. At the same time, 71-year-old Cynthia Gardner was approaching the intersection in a Ford F350 on Forest Hill Boulevard.
The sheriff’s office said as the teenage driver entered the northbound lanes, the two vehicles ended up colliding with each other. The Lexus struck, the driver’s side of the Ford, according to the news release.
PBSO said Gardner’s Ford spun out onto the center median, struck a tree, and then “violently rotated” back onto the northbound lanes. The PBSO report said Gardner was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The teenage driver did not receive any injuries, but tragically the elderly woman was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center where she died from her injuries five days later on Monday at 9:45 p.m.
The sheriff’s office did not disclose whether the 17-year-old boy will be facing any charges.
