A Leesburg man was arrested after allegedly punching his female companion when she laughed at him because Game Stop would not trade for his console.
An officer responded to Game Stop, located at 10300 U.S. Hwy. 441, regarding a 911 call reporting a woman who came into the business claiming to be kidnapped around 6:32 p.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Upon arrival, the officer met with the store manager who stated 20-year-old J N A and the victim came into the store to trade in a gaming console. The console was missing parts, and he was unable to take it in on trade, the report said.
The pair left the business, but the victim ran back inside shouting that A struck her and would not give her cellphone back. She told the store manager that she needed him to contact the police and have them respond, the report said.
A then walked back into the store and began shouting at the victim. The store manager told him to leave due to him causing a disturbance, to which he started shouting at the store manager. During this, the victim left the business and walked away, leaving behind the vehicle they arrived in, the report said.
A then left and retrieved a small juvenile from the vehicle. He walked away westbound, the report said.
While the officer spoke with the store manager and advised assisting officers to the possible whereabouts of A, the victim approached her vehicle and got inside. The officer made contact with her while she sat in the driver’s seat, the report said.
The victim explained that after trying to unsuccessfully sell the gaming console, A became enraged. They left the business with it and got into her vehicle. Once side, he was uttering under his breath about the situation, and she laughed at him, the report said.
A told the victim that the laughing was a turn off. She replied that she was not trying to turn him on. He then looked at her, raised his right fist and struck her in the right cheek, causing swelling and a bruise under her right eye, the report said.
The victim fought back in self-defense while shouting for Acevedo to get out of the vehicle numerous times. She decided to exit to de-escalate the situation, but he also got out and followed her. She continued to walk away from her vehicle toward the sidewalk near U.S. Highway 441, the report said.
Acevedo still followed the victim, and once she was near shrubbery separating the parking from the grass area, he forcefully bumped into her. She stumbled but caught her balance. He then turned away from her and began to walk back to her vehicle, the report said.
As he did so, A shouted to the victim about her phone and threw her iPhone 12 toward her. It landed on the ground which caused the back glass to shatter. The victim estimated the phone’s value at $300. She picked it up and continued walking away eastbound, the report said.
The officer noticed bruising under the victim’s right eye and slight swelling on her right cheek where she claimed Acevedo struck her with a closed fist. She wished to prosecute and signed the portion of her statement indicating such, the report said.
While speaking with the victim, assisting officers found Acevedo on U.S. Highway 441 near the intersection of College Drive. He was walking while holding his and the victim’s child. He provided his information which revealed he had a Lake County warrant for criminal mischief to which he damaged the tires on the victim’s vehicle, the report said.
At that point, the officer with the victim relocated to Acevedo’s location. He was put in handcuffs, and the child was temporarily placed with a K-9 unit the victim arrived to take custody. The officer assisted Acevedo into his patrol vehicle and took him to the LPD for the booking process, the report said.
Acevedo was ultimately charged with simple battery (domestic) and criminal mischief (over $200 under $1,000). He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $12,000.
