A family was displaced after a kitchen fire ignited in a Cape Coral apartment Saturday night.
According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, a neighbor of the residence in the 100 block of Cape Coral Parkway used a fire extinguisher to put out a majority of the flames.
Firefighters responded to the scene just before 9 p.m. The resident said she had been cooking and thought she turned off the burner. The residual oil in the pan caught fire, CCFD said.
A light haze of smoke and some fire in the microwave was extinguished by firefighters. There were no injuries from the fire.
The residents of the apartment, a woman, two children and a dog, were displaced and contacted by the Red Cross for temporary housing.
The neighbor, Luis Marti, was given a Community Recognition Coin by the fire department for his heroic actions in containing the fire and preventing it from spreading.
