A mother and her five children were displaced from their Pompano Beach home after authorities said it caught fire Tuesday morning.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue said they responded to a residential fire near the 900 block of Pine Drive.
Upon the arrival of first responders, authorities said the single-family home was fully engulfed in flames.
A PBFR spokesperson said firefighters swiftly intervened and extinguished the fire, but later confirmed the house sustained irreparable damage, resulting in a total loss.
Authorities said further investigation revealed the fire started after an 8-year-old boy was playing with matches inside the residence.
According to PBFR, the boy was accompanied by his 14-year-old sibling at the time of the incident.
They said the boy received minor burns to his fingers while igniting the matches and no other injuries were reported.
Authorities confirmed the Red Cross is assisting in finding temporary housing for the family.
