UPDATE: As of 10 a.m., northbound traffic is STILL backed up for miles. Police remain on the scene as the investigation into the fatal crash continues.

UPDATE: As of 8 a.m., northbound traffic is backed up PAST Palmetto Park Road. That is a multi-mile backup due to the fatal crash near Congress. Stay off of I-95 NB in Boca Raton.

An early morning fatal crash on I-95 in Boca Raton has closed the interstate northbound. The crash is in the area of Congress Avenue. Backups appear to span several miles.

The Florida Department of Transportation issued this alert via its FL511.com notification system: “Crash in Palm Beach County on I-95 North, before Exit 50: Congress Ave. 4 Left lanes blocked. Last updated at 06:21 AM. Road Ranger Ahead. Move Over or Slow Down.”

We are awaiting an update from Florida Highway Patrol. The crash was first reported around 5:30 a.m. Fatal crash investigations traditionally last for several hours. Expect problems on I-95 NB well into the morning. Your best bet: exit I-95 at Palmetto Park Road — or before Palmetto Park Road — and use Military Trail or Powerline/Jog to the west. Head north to at least Linton Boulevard in Delray Beach and rejoin the Interstate there.
