Federal investigators continued their investigation on Sunday to determine the cause of a plane crash in Nassau County that claimed the life of a 56-year-old pilot.
Authorities have confirmed that Blackrock Road, which was closed for several hours on Saturday as the investigation unfolded, has been reopened; however, the public is urged to avoid the area to allow officials with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to continue their work.
The crash occurred around 9:35 a.m. when a Piper single-engine aircraft, which had just departed from Clearwater Air Park, went down in a wooded area near Blackrock Road.
Images from the scene show the aftermath of the crash, with one nearby resident describing the terrifying moment her fence caught fire from the impact. She chose to remain anonymous but shared her experience with News4JAX.
“It frightened me so much that if the plane had crashed any closer, my house could have been gone,” she said.
Witnesses or anyone with video footage of the incident are encouraged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
