FHP: Passenger killed in single vehicle crash in Lake County

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating after the passenger in a car was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Lake County early Sunday morning.

According to FHP, a 2024 Chevy Malibu traveling eastbound on County Road 48 (Leesburg Highway) approaching the intersection of County Road 33 failed to stop at a stop sign and ran off the roadway. FHP said the car hit a ditch, went airborne, struck a tree and then overturned.

The driver was transported to Leesburg Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The passenger, a 41-year-old Puerto Rican man, was also transported to Leesburg Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. FHP said he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
