A man riding a motorcycle on Merritt Island died in a crash on Friday which Florida Highway Patrol troopers believe was caused by a vehicle that turned into his path.
The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of South Tropical Trail and Cone Road, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, the motorcyclist — identified as a 26-year-old Ocala man — was traveling northbound on South Tropical Trail when he swerved to the left, lost control and ran off the roadway. This caused him to strike a concrete wall and be thrown from the bike, the report states.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said, adding he was wearing a helmet during the crash.
Investigators believe an unknown vehicle traveling westbound on Cone Road had begun to make a left turn onto southbound South Tropical Trail when the motorcyclist entered the intersection, causing the motorcycle to swerve out of the way, according to the report. The unknown vehicle was described only as a white smart car.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact FHP.
An investigation is ongoing.
