FHP: Semi driver falls asleep at wheel, causing 4-vehicle crash on I-10 in Escambia County

A four-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks caused one to overturn and the other to jackknife on I-10 west in Escambia County Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, troopers were first called to an overturned semi on I-10 west near mile marker 5. The driver — a 46-year-old Sacramento man — told FHP he “thinks he fell asleep and went off the roadway to the left.”

The front tires went into the grassy median, which caused the semi and its trailer to roll onto its side. The trailer contains 37, 000 pounds of cranberry juice.

According to FHP, as the semi exited the roadway, it collided with a sedan driven by a 93-year-old Pensacola man. His car subsequently hit an SUV driven by a 47-year-old Milton woman.

Approximately 1/4 mile east, another semi driven by a 34-year-old Hattiesburg woman attempted to stop but went off the roadway to the left and jackknifed in the center median. This tractor trailer was empty.

None of the drivers sustained any injuries.

The crash blocked all westbound lanes, causing backups.

No further details have been released.
