FHP: Toddler critically injured running across roadway in NW Ocala

A toddler was seriously injured Wednesday night when he was hit by a car. He remains hospitalized. Here’s what we know:

When and where did the crash occur? About 7:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Northwest 55th Avenue in Ocala.

Who’s in charge of the investigation? Florida Highway Patrol.

How did the crash happen? Authorities said an older model Honda, driven by a 40-year-old woman from Ocala, was northbound on 55th Avenue approaching Northwest Third Place.

The child, a 2-year-old boy, ran across 55th Avenue from west to east, law enforcement officials said. Troopers said the boy was hit by the vehicle. At the time of the crash, investigators, said the roadway was dark with no streetlights.

Where was the child was taken? First to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The child was then transferred to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville for further treatment, troopers said. The child was still hospitalized in critical condition, troopers said. As of 1:55 p.m. Thursday, troopers said the child was still in critical condition.

A neighbor told a Star-Banner reporter she was inside her residence when she heard screaming. She went to the front door, saw the commotion and called 911. She said family members of the child were outside crying and consoling each other.

Where did the child live? In the community, troopers said.

Any information about the driver? Yes. Troopers said she lives in the community and was going home from work.

Was anyone charged? No, the investigation is ongoing.
