Fire crews contain apartment fire in Belle Glade, nearby buildings damaged from heat

BELLE GLADE, Fla. (CBS12) — Crews battle an apartment fire in Belle Glade on Tuesday afternoon.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) said at 12:35 p.m., units from the surrounding area were dispatched to an apartment fire on 5th Street, near Avenue B.

As firefighters were responding to the call, they noticed a large plume of smoke coming from the scene. When crews arrived, they found a two-story apartment on fire, the second floor engulfed in flames.

PBCFR said the building appeared to be abandoned, but a search was still conducted through the building. Neighbors also told fire rescue there was no one living at the apartment. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries.

Due to the sheer intensity of the fire, the roof and part of the second story collapsed. PBCFR said two adjacent buildings suffered some external damage from the intense heat of the flames.

Fire rescue said the blaze was brought under control in about 20 minutes. A PBCFR investigator is at the scene, and fire trucks will remain there to monitor for possible flare-ups.
