Firefighters clean up a crash between two semi-trucks and a cargo train in Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) – The traffic mess in Hawthorne got worse tonight before it got better.

Firefighters cleaned up a spill following a crash between two semi-trucks and a cargo train.

Officials say the crash at the intersection of Southeast 71st Avenue and 221st Street injured one person who was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Maintenance work had closed the CSX railroad crossing on US Highway 301 which had traffic, including heavy trucks, taking a detour through local streets.

FDOT officials say the closure should continue through Thursday.

Residents are frustrated over the congestion, including former mayor Matt Surrency, who posted on social media saying crews should have conducted the repairs in phases.
