A person was able to escape a burning duplex in Martin County on Wednesday morning.

Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) says at around 1 a.m., multiple units responded to a structure fire near Southeast Norfolk Boulevard. Upon arrival, crews found a duplex that was 25% engulfed in flames.

Firefighters quickly launched a fire attack, throwing water on the blaze and extinguishing it.

Photos show a home with an unrecognizable room that is completely charred.

MCFR says the sole occupant of the duplex was not hurt and was evaluated for possible smoke inhalation. The person refused further treatment.

The side of the home where the fire started is a total loss. The Red Cross is assisting the occupant of the home.
