First responders care for injured driver’s dog after life-threatening accident

Holmes County first responders are sharing a heart-warming story, that came out of a scary situation.

They responded to a traffic crash a little after 8:00 pm Monday on Interstate 10. A car ran off the highway at mile marker 109 and into the tree line.

The driver, a 56-year-old man from Alexandria Louisiana, suffered a bad cut on his head and was air-lifted to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay. But the whole-time paramedics were trying to treat him, the man kept asking about Otis. Turns out Otis is his small pug dog.

Bonifay Fire and Rescue pulled Otis out of the car, along with his owner. They said he was scared because of the crash, but physically he was fine.

Bonifay Fire and Rescue workers and Holmes County Sheriff’s Deputies took turns holding Otis, petting him, and calming him down.

A Holmes County Sheriff’s Deputy is taking care of Otis until his owner is released from the hospital.
