A seemingly tranquil day of fishing at a community lake in Miami-Dade County took a dramatic turn after police said a confrontation ensued between a resident and two individuals who were fishing behind his home on Wednesday evening.
According to the suspect’s arrest report, the victim, who is under 18, and a witness were fishing at a lake behind the residence of 62-year-old Jordan Oswaldo, located near the 14000 block of Southwest 46th Street, when he approached them and told them they were not allowed to fish there.
When the victim told Oswaldo that the community permitted fishing, Oswaldo became agitated and grabbed the victim’s backpack he was wearing while threatening to beat him up and throw him into the lake, Miami-Dade police said.
Despite the victim’s demands not to touch him, Oswaldo persisted until releasing him and then engaging in a heated argument before forcibly taking the victim’s fishing rod, according to the arrest report.
A struggle ensued for the fishing road and Oswaldo attempted to break it with his knee, but failed, the report stated.
Shortly after, police said Oswaldo retreated into his home.
The victim then informed his mother, who contacted the police, authorities said.
Police said Oswaldo was transported to the Miami-Dade Police Hammocks District for an interview, where, after being read his Miranda rights, he invoked his right to counsel.
Oswaldo is facing one count each of strongarm attempted robbery and child abuse with no great bodily harm.
Police did not include the age of the victim on Oswaldo’s arrest report.
Oswaldo no longer appeared in the jail database, as of Thursday afternoon.
