Florida Man Charged With Animal Cruelty After Tethering Dog To Flooded Doghouse During Downpour

A Florida man is facing animal cruelty charges after Collier County deputies found his dog tethered to a pole outside during heavy rainfall, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

43-year-old Romeo Gabriel-Lopez allegedly left his dog, a bully terrier named Robo, tied up outside with no way to escape the downpour.

The sheriff’s office reports that at least a foot of water flooded the dog’s doghouse while it was restrained.

Deputies arrived at the scene on June 12th in response to a call about an animal in distress.

Upon finding Robo outside, they rescued the dog and attempted to contact Gabriel-Lopez. Investigators eventually reached him by phone, and he reportedly agreed to surrender custody of the dog.

Robo, described as a 2-3-year-old terrier weighing around 30 pounds, was taken into care by animal control. Following an investigation, Gabriel-Lopez was arrested on Wednesday after deputies determined there was probable cause for animal cruelty charges.

“We have zero-tolerance for animal cruelty in Collier County,” Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said. “Thanks to the diligent efforts by our Animal Cruelty Investigations Alliance, Robo is safe and his owner is in our custody and will be held accountable for his neglectful actions.”
