A Fort Lauderdale Police officer was hospitalized after helping to rescue a dog from an apartment fire Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out at a building along the 700 block of Northwest 12th Terrace around 9:20 a.m.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials said firefighters and officers responded and found smoke coming from a unit.
They also received a report of a dog still inside.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and the dog was found and rescued.
The officer was expected to be okay, along with the dog and two teens who were able to get out of the apartment uninjured.
Fire rescue officials said the fire started in the kitchen.
The teens’ mother said she was at work nearby when she received a call from her daughter.
“All I heard was my daughter screaming saying ‘the house is on fire, the house is on fire!’ So I’m like ‘did you guys call 911? What happened, what’s going on?’ It was like ‘the house is on fire, we can’t find the dog,'” the mother said.
