Four people rescued from sinking boat off the coast of the Florida Keys

Four people were rescued after their boat began to sink off the coast of Marathon on Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said a distress call came in at around 5 p.m. reporting the boat was taking on water around 11 miles off the coast.

In response, a USCG Station Marathon boat crew was dispatched and were able to find and rescue the four people from the sinking 27-foot boat.

“Our crews consistently prepare to respond to these situations day and night. Thanks to their prompt call for help, we were able to get on scene quickly and conduct a successful rescue before they entered the water,” said Sector Key West watchstander Zachary Aparo.

The rescued individuals were safely taken ashore without injury. The vessel’s owner is currently making arrangements to salvage the boat since the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) states that derelict and at-risk vessels are a concern because they can endanger marine life and habitat, pose threats to public safety, and cause property damage as they drift on or beneath the water’s surface.
