The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday that an arrest has been made in a stabbing on Normandy Boulevard that left an 18-year-old woman dead in September 2022.
Ms’Tayari Chaka Cohen, 21, has been charged with manslaughter in the death of Laniya Frederick.
According to police, on Sept. 5, 2022, officers responded to a reported stabbing on Normandy Boulevard just west of Lane Avenue South.
They found Frederick, who was taken to the hospital for surgery but did not survive her injuries. She died five days later.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, and partners from the State Attorney’s Office responded to the scene to investigate.
JSO said that after a long-term investigation, which included witness cooperation and gathering other pertinent information, Cohen was identified by detectives and an arrest warrant on a manslaughter charge was issued for her on July 24 of this year.
Investigators found Cohen, who had been a fugitive, and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Criminal Apprehension Unit took her into custody on Nov. 3.
