A Gainesville man and his dog were killed after being struck by a speeding driver, according to police. Several neighbors witnessed the aftermath of the crash.
What was once a lively street, perfect for walkers and joggers, has now turned somber.
J B, a neighbor of M Us, who lost his life in the incident, shared details of that life-changing night.
“At first, I didn’t recognize who it was, but then I heard the screaming. I ran to the other side of the overturned SUV and saw his brother and his dog. I immediately thought it was M, and I ran back to him,” said B.
On Thursday evening, Gainesville police reported that M U and his dog lost their lives at the intersection of Northeast 16th Avenue and 7th Street, victims of a speeding driver.
“But I could see it in his eyes because I had seen that look before when my husband passed away, I knew he was gone,” B added.
Neighbors said that M’s brother witnessed the accident and performed CPR before paramedics arrived on the scene.
M D expressed that this crash serves as a wake-up call for drivers to be more cautious. “Driving recklessly in a residential neighborhood is something I just don’t understand,” D said.
Family and friends have come together to celebrate U’ life and honor his legacy. “He was known as a very sweet man, a very nice man, and a very giving man. He and his dog, E, will both be missed,” D added.
WCJB reached out to the Gainesville police for more information on whether the driver has been charged but has not yet received a response.
