Girlfriend ends up in hospital after fight over SUV in Leesburg

A Wildwood man was arrested for battery after a fight with his girlfriend over their SUV landed her in the hospital.

Officers responded to a battery at an undisclosed Leesburg residence around 11:54 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. Prior to their arrival, dispatch advised that they got a 911 call from a female victim stating her boyfriend, with whom she shared two children and lived with as a family, had battered her. She identified her boyfriend as 34-year-old David Michael Boyd.

Once at the scene, an officer met with the victim who stated she and Boyd got into a verbal and physical altercation about her trying to retrieve the SUV they both owned. He was unable to keep talking with the victim at the time due to her being treated by EMS and transported to the hospital, the report said.

The officers instead spoke with Boyd’s mother, a witness and the homeowner of the residence. She explained Boyd came to her residence due to him and the victim previously being in a verbal altercation. The victim showed up at her residence in a Tesla and continued arguing with Boyd over his unwillingness to give her the SUV, the report said.

The victim got into the front passenger seat while Boyd sat in the driver’s seat where they continued to argue. He then got out of the vehicle to retrieve one of their children, to which the victim switched to the driver’s seat. While there, she tried to drive off and in doing so struck the Tesla she arrived in which was occupied by her daughter, the report said.

Boyd put the SUV in park, and the victim got out of the vehicle to re-engage in an argument with him. Once she got out, he got back into the SUV and drove away from the scene, the report said.

The officers next spoke to Boyd’s sister. She explained that she arrived at the residence when she observed the victim in the driver’s seat of the SUV, to which the victim drove forward in the SUV and struck the Tesla. Amid the altercation, one of the children fell out of the SUV, the report said.

The victim proceeded to exit the vehicle and try to batter Boyd. He got back into the SUV in an attempt to leave the scene. The victim then tried to grab the door handle of the SUV and fell in the process, the report said.

The officers moved on to the third witness who gave them an inconsistent statement each time she was asked to explain the situation. She tried to explain but would contradict each previous statement with what she said next, the report said.

The officers then watched in-car footage from the Tesla. They saw the SUV strike the Tesla before the car reversed and parked. Boyd struck the victim multiple times and tried to pull her from the driver’s side door of the SUV. They drove off in the SUV while both were still in the driver’s seat, the report said.

The vehicle came to an abrupt stop when the driver’s door swung open. Boyd pushed the victim out of the vehicle, in which he pushed her to the ground and landed on top of her. He proceeded to drag her away from the SUV and drove away from the scene, the report said.

After speaking with all parties on scene, officers relocated to UF Health Hospital, located at 600 E. Dixie Ave. They spoke with the victim who advised that she wanted to retrieve the SUV, which she and Boyd co-owned. He had left their residence and gone to his mother’s place, the report said.

In order to gain custody of the vehicle from Boyd, the victim reached out to a family member of Boyd who directed her to where his mother lived. She then had her daughter drive her over in her Tesla, the report said.

Once at the residence, a verbal altercation with Boyd and his mother ensued while she proceeded to load their kids into the SUV. Boyd got out on the driver’s side of the SUV, and the victim crawled over the front passenger seat to the driver’s seat. The reason for entering the driver’s seat was to relocate the vehicle due to Boyd’s mother saying she was trespassing, the report said.

The victim put the vehicle in drive, to which Boyd entered from the passenger side and started to strike her with a closed fist multiple times on the right side of her face. He then turned the wheel of the vehicle and struck the Tesla. He got out of the vehicle, moved over to the driver’s side door and tried to pull the victim out of the SUV, the report said.

Once Boyd was unable to pull the victim out of the SUV, he got into the driver’s seat with her and drove off the property. It was a couple houses away when he pushed her out onto the ground, taking off with her son in the vehicle, the report said.

The report noted that officers were advised by the victim that medical staff told her she sustained a fractured forearm from the incident.

Boyd was ultimately arrested on charge of aggravated battery (domestic). He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $10,000 bond.
