A pregnant teenager and her grandmother were shot and killed during a home invasion over the weekend near Vero Beach, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office (IRCSO).
As a result of the shooting, the unborn child also died, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said in a Facebook video Tuesday.
Outside the home, a small angel-shaped candle holder, a handwritten letter, and an old photo now mark the place of what sheriff’s deputies are calling a heinous homicide.
Both the granddaughter, 19, and grandmother, 68, were pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. An additional person was injured as a result of the home invasion, Flowers said.
“It is a heinous crime. It is a terrible situation,” Flowers said.
Loved ones shared a photo of the teen with WPEC’s Katie Bente, taken just a few years ago.
According to IRCSO, the shooting happened on Sunday at around 3:45 a.m. at a home on the corner of 23rd Place SW and 6th Way SW.
Flowers also said on Monday that deputies had been to the home where the homicide occurred several times.
Investigators have been talking to witnesses and neighbors, and believe that the shooting is an isolated incident, deputies say,
As the investigation unfolds more details will be forthcoming, Flowers said.
