Hazardous ice conditions cause crashes, prompt I-95, other road closures in Nassau County

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent winter traffic advisory on Wednesday warning residents of dangerous ice conditions across the county.

The Sheriff’s Office said severe ice accumulation on roads and bridges has already caused several crashes.

A major crash with injuries was reported at 6:30 a.m. on I-95 South and right lanes were blocked.

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) / Shave Bridge reopened at 3:15 a.m. after a brief closure but cars will be escorted by Sheriff’s Office vehicles and must follow the escort guidance.

As of 4 a.m., current road closures in Nassau County included:

  • I-95 southbound at the Florida-Georgia line
  • Chester Road
  • County Road 108 between 17 and U.S. Highway 1 (local traffic only)

Hazardous conditions have been reported as follows:

  • Significant ice on U.S. Highway 1 and the Georgia Bridge
  • Dangerous conditions on Lofton Creek Bridge
  • Widespread ice throughout Hilliard and northern Nassau County

Emergency services are responding to multiple incidents, and roads will remain closed until conditions improve and safety is assured. Updates will continue to be provided.

More than 2,200 customers were reported without power in Nassau County around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
