K H was still in shock after a deadly shooting at the Washington Square apartments on Fernwood Avenue in Clearwater early Saturday morning.
“I got shot once and he got shot twice, but it cost him his life,” she said.
Police have not identified the man who died, but his family said the victim was 51-year-old L C.
“We are two weeks shy of a four-year anniversary,” Hawk said. “I’m going to miss it. He’s my hero.”
Detectives said the shooting began after the suspect showed up at the apartment and confronted H’s 19-year-old son.
“He sacrificed his life to make sure I got away safely, and for that, I couldn’t. I couldn’t — I can’t repay that, because he’s not here anymore,” her son, P C, said. “I can’t. It’s just, I just feel like if I would have just done something differently last night.”
The victim’s family said a prank led to the deadly confrontation.
“I had did something that wasn’t very mature to a gentleman’s car across the street,” C said. “I had egged his car.”
As police continued their search for the shooter Saturday, the family said they are reminded of what they’ve lost.
“It’s even harder for me to be here because all his stuff is in the house, and I have to constantly see it,” Hawk said. “You know what? I enjoy seeing it because I know a piece of him is here.”
C’s family is pleading for the shooter to come forward and turn himself in. Anyone with information is asked to call Clearwater Police at 727-562-4242.
