A Hernando man died in a fiery crash after suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel on Sunday.
The 87-year-old was stopped at a stop sign at 5340 West Grover Cleveland Boulevard at 2:38 p.m. when he suffered a medical emergency and took his foot off the brake, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The man’s Kia Forte then drove west across the highway and struck a sign. The accelerator was depressed while the car was stopped against the sign, causing the wheels to spin.
The grass beneath the wheels caught fire and it spread to the car. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
