The suspect who stabbed an off-duty deputy and stole their cruiser has been caught, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO).
PBSO says on Tuesday afternoon, the off-duty deputy went to a Cost-Less Cleaners, located in the shopping plaza at the intersection of S. Jog Road and Lake Worth Road. He left his car running as he went inside to pick up his clothes.
That’s when the deputy came across an armed robbery taking place inside the dry cleaners shop.
PBSPO says the deputy tried to confront the alleged robber, but it led to the suspect stabbing the deputy once in the arm and another time in the chest.
After the stabbing, the suspect jumped into the deputy’s cruiser and fled the scene, PBSO says. The suspect eventually abandoned the cruiser about a mile away from the crime scene.
According to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, a second off-duty deputy, who was close to the scene, immediately responded and helped stop the injured deputy from bleeding.
Following the incident the deputy was taken to the hospital for surgery and is in stable condition, deputies said.
PBSO confirms that the suspect was homeless and was found hiding at a nearby library. He was apprehended with the help of surveillance cameras and community members.
“The tactical units went over, started searching the library, found him the bathroom. You know what he was doing? Shaving the goatee off. He had taken one shirt off, it’s got blood all over it, threw it in the garbage and got another shirt on,” Sheriff Ric Bradshaw told CBS12 News. “It’s a good story to show how much the community-policing interdiction effort works with homicide and detectives.”
The suspect has been identified as 73-year-old Glen Gotell, and he has been booked and faces multiple charges, including Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery, and Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer.
Gotell’s first appearance is set for Wednesday at 10 a.m.
