Homicide in Hernando: Argument leads to deadly stabbing, burial

Two men were arrested in connection to the murder of a man in Spring Hill, after detectives were led to the victim’s buried body.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) said on September 20,detectives received a tip about a body possibly buried in a yard at a home on Algood Road. The tip led to a homicide investigation.

Detectives were able to identify a suspect, 37-year-old Jeffrey Brehony, who lived in a dilapidated structure on the property with the owner’s consent. Witnesses told the sheriff’s office that Brehony had been acting irrationally and was paranoid about being watched.

HCSO investigators said someone working on the property for Brehony mentioned that he had made suspicious comments about a homeless person, Kevin Walden. The sheriff’s office said Brehony and Walden had argued recently, fueled by Brehony’s paranoia.

The argument escalated into a physical fight, resulting in Walden being stabbed to death, the sheriff’s office said. Brehony then enlisted the help of 55-year-old Duane Sanders, also known as Hillbilly, to dig a grave and bury Walden’s body.

When questioned, Sanders admitted to detectives that he had dug the grave and buried Walden. Brehony was also questioned and claimed Walden had committed suicide by stabbing himself. Brehony said due to his criminal history, he burned his blood-stained clothes.

Detectives said they obtained a search warrant and, with Sanders’ guidance, located the victim’s body, his vehicle, and the partially burned duffel bag hidden in a heavily wooded area. An autopsy revealed Walden died from homicidal violence. The murder weapon, a knife, was found in a nearby storm drain.

With the evidence collected from the scene and witness accounts, Brehony and Walden were booked into the Hernando County Jail on no bond for:

Jeffrey Wayne Brehony:

  • Abuse of a Dead Human
  • 2nd Degree Murder

Duane Sanders

  • Abuse of a Dead Human
  • Accessory After the Fact to 2nd Degree Murder
