‘I cry every day’: Mother fights for daughter recovering after being struck by lightning in Brevard County

A Minnesota mother is preparing to bring her daughter home after a lightning strike left the girl with severe injuries during a Florida vacation.

For the last 15 months, N. Y. has sat by her daughter’s hospital bed, praying she’ll be OK.

“I cry every day. I cannot eat, but I had to survive myself,” Y said.

The single mother of two brought her family to Brevard County on vacation to celebrate M’s 12th birthday, never thinking they’d still be there for her 13th.

M and Y were struck by lightning on the beach in Sebastian Inlet last August. They were both thrown to the ground. Nalee was able to get up, but M was not. That’s when her brother did something that saved her life: CPR.

“I always think, always think about my sister. And, you know, not a day goes on where I don’t think about my sister,” said Joshua, the bother of M.

Y has no family or real support system in Florida. She’s been living in her daughter’s hospital room, day in and day out, watching her body heal but not her mind. M can only open her eyes. She can’t swallow or eat. She doesn’t speak or seem to recognize anybody.

“A lot of people say why you can’t handle this by yourself. I had no choice. I had no choice. She’s my baby. There’s nothing that I can do. I cannot leave her like that,” Yang said.

Y said she’s been trying to get a hospital in Minnesota to admit her daughter, but she’s had no luck.

“No hospital wants to receive my daughter up there. That’s why it takes so long. They don’t want to take her,” Y said.

Y said the doctors in Florida told her because M was so young when the accident happened, her brain has a 50-50 chance of recovering. So she’s holding out hope and finally bringing her home next week to take care of M herself. But she worries.

“How I can be handled her by myself, or how I am I going to live my life? Because I’m getting old. How do I going to take her for a longer time? You know? So I just had the thinking of so much,” Y said.

Y is raising money on GoFundMe to find a way to pay for hospital bills and other expenses. You can donate by clicking the link.
