A Leesburg man was arrested for suspected DUI after crashing on his motorcycle and attempting to walk into traffic.
An officer was patrolling southbound on U.S. Highway 441 at the intersection with Citizens Boulevard when he was flagged down by multiple individuals regarding a traffic crash around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Upon arrival, the officer observed two men pushing a motorcycle toward the sidewalk on Citizens Boulevard. He approached them, and a man in a black leather jacket, later identified as 50-year-old B W M, walked away from the motorcycle and into busy traffic. The witnesses pointed at him and advised that he was driving, the report said.
M appeared unsteady on his feet and was stumbling. The officer called out to him, telling him to stop, but he continued walking. The officer followed and detained him on the property of 1200 U.S. Hwy. 441, the report said.
During the officer’s interaction with M, he showed several signs of inebriation. He had glossy eyes, an unsteady stance and a strong odor of alcohol as he spoke. He spontaneously uttered multiple times that he was not driving, the report said.
More officers arrived on scene and spoke to a witness who stated they observed M driving the motorcycle eastbound on Citizens Boulevard. He was unable to maintain a single lane before dropping the motorcycle. The witness approached to assist him and confirmed that the detained individual was the same person who had been driving the motorcycle, the report said.
The motorcycle, a red 2004 Honda, was still operational and had the keys in the ignition. A records check revealed it was registered to M. He was asked to complete field sobriety exercises but refused, the report said.
At 10:24 p.m., the officer placed M under arrest using handcuffs. He was then taken to the LPD Adult Booking for further DUI investigations. He was read his rights, but he refused to answer any questions. He was also informed of Florida’s implied consent law and was given an opportunity to submit to breath and urine tests, both of which he refused, the report said.
M was issued a court date of Dec. 31, and he refused to sign the citation. Throughout the interaction, he repeatedly asked about the status of his motorcycle, the report said.
The Ohio native was charged with DUI (second offense) and refuse to sign citation. He was transported to Lake County Jail and released after posting $1,500 bond.
