OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) – Marion County Sheriff’s deputies say a man fell from scaffolding at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) and died Monday afternoon.
Authorities say he was a construction worker who fell just before 1 p.m. A 911 caller told operators the worker fell off scaffolding.
Construction is underway at WEC for a new event center and shopping plaza, However, it’s not confirmed whether this is the site of the accident.
“They have to be strapped to the roof when they’re doing it so hearing that someone is doing construction on scaffolding who knows how tall or height-wise,” said Emily Ristow, a resident. “It makes you think are they strapped in, are they safe, are they being safe and obviously from the events they may have not been and it cost someone’s life which is very unfortunate.”
Ristow says her dad works in roofing and often has to do construction on scaffolding.
“I couldn’t imagine getting the phone call and not hearing that he’ll ever come home just cause one slip up at work and cost him his life unfortunately, so it’s very heartbreaking to hear,” said Ristow. “I would be devastated and I couldn’t imagine the families having to deal with that now.”
Sheriff’s deputies say this is an active investigation. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also confirmed the agency is investigating the death.
